• Advocated the development of a Spanish Immersion Program with FCPS and the State of Kentucky Education Department.
  • Worked with FCPS in planning and developing the middle and high school Spanish immersion programs.
  • Co-hosted middle and high school orientation programs to familiarize parents and students with those programs in advance.
  • Advocated the development of Spanish language programs at other elementary schools in Fayette County, including Cardinal Valley Elementary.
  • Helped provide funding for class trips, including the annual 8th Grade Spanish Immersion foreign language (Costa Rica) trip.
  • Produced program recognition T-shirts and sweat shirts.
  • Affected a major FCPS sibling preference policy change. The new sibling preference policy allows the siblings of immersion students in middle or high school to receive preference in the lottery.
  • Communicated Spanish textbook needs to IAKSS, which led to new Spanish biology and literature books being purchased for high school students.
  • Conducted planning for the Maxwell Playground and provided over $4,000 for Playground Equipment at Maxwell Elementary.
  • Donated $300 to BSTMS to buy Spanish advanced reader books.
  • Allocated $1,000 to BSHS to buy scientific periodicals and other texts in Spanish.
  • Donated more than $900 for the Maxwell Friendship Garden.
  • Allocated $2,000 for a Garden Pergola and worked with Bill Henkel on the design for the Friendship Garden in the Maxwell playground.
  • Donated more than $300 to Maxwell for landscaping around the school.
  • Donated over $600 to BSTMS to purchase computer equipment
  • Held a charity event for Medical Mission Ecuador which raised nearly $2,000 and framed the beautiful tapestry that was hand-made by the Salasaca people of Ecuador, an indigenous group that lives in the Andes Mountains near Ambato, Ecuador.
  • Encouraged largest freshman class ever (21 for ’05-06) by hosting a comprehensive high school information night that included talks by immersion and non-immersion teachers, high school students, the principal, and the counselor.

The Spanish Immersion Program is a K-12 program in the Fayette County Public Schools in Lexington, Kentucky. Students are taught the Spanish language through partial immersion by native Spanish speakers teaching Science and Math.

Our SIP students are among the top performing students in the state on standardized tests. Students who complete the program through high school are bilingual with native level mastery and have had exposure to a variety of different cultures from Spanish-speaking countries.
